Located on Rt. 8, approximately 1/4mile west from the “4 corners” in the Village of Speculator, the Town of Lake Pleasant Public Library is a relatively "new" library, having received its charter in 2002. Prior to that, books were housed in an old historical one room building, but with no official connection to a library system. Local volunteers came together to build the new library, but it was soon evident that we were experiencing some "growing pains" and an addition was needed.  In the spring of 2004, Camp Fowler, associated with the Reformed Church in America, celebrated its 50th anniversary and as part of their celebration committed funds and volunteers to build an addition. Together with local volunteers and additional funding from the Town of Lake Pleasant and the Friends of the Library, the addition was completed by Labor Day, 2004.      On May 22, 2005, we held our ribbon cutting ceremony to officially name the new addition the Fowler Wing which houses the new Children’s Room and Adirondack Reading / Meeting Room. The Meeting Room is available for small group meetings by reservation.      Our Friends of the Library group has over 50 members and meets monthly. Book sales are held periodically and donations of saleable books are gratefully accepted.     The Library also offers numerous programs free to the public in topics ranging from instructional to informational.  Currently, our library contains over 11,000 books with a special collections dedicated to the Adirondacks. Our materials include books, audio and videocassettes, CD’s and magazines. The CD collection contains audio CD’s as well as a widely varied assortment of adult, children’s and informational CD’s.      Automation has been fully implemented with patrons having the opportunity to view the collections of all libraries in the Southern Adirondack Library System and the Mohawk Valley Library System (MVLS/SALS). If the Lake Pleasant Library does not have a specific title, our Inter-Library Loan program allows us to search for the item and obtain it for the patron. Our computer access allows patrons to an index of over 6,000 magazines and journals. Patrons can access this information as well as our “card catalog” from home by going to the SALS website:www.sals.edu.   Go to http://www.sals.edu/libpacs/lkppublic2.shtml for on-line research, data bases and library catalog.  Library cards are issued free of charge from anyone requesting one. This card is good for 5 years and can be used at any library within the SALS/MVLS system.  A valid driver’s license or other proof of a valid address is required. Children also have the opportunity to obtain a library card. Internet access is provided free of charge to anyone having a SALS/MVLS card. We also offer a wireless connection which can be used in close proximity to the library. We also offer a copying and fax service at a nominal charge.  The Lake Pleasant Library is open year-round on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed on all legal holidays.   518-548-4411
